# Import and export schemas

> Exchange bounded versioned configuration without importing executable PHP.

```php theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark"}}
use Bjanczak\FilamentFlexFields\Support\Components\Schema\FamilySchemaCodec;
$codec = app(FamilySchemaCodec::class);
$json = $codec->export([$definition]);
$definitions = $codec->import($json);
```

The portable format stores installed family IDs, options and version numbers;
it cannot supply a renderer class, callback or arbitrary method name. Import
rejects unknown families, unsupported future versions, malformed flags, duplicate
slugs and unknown options. It runs only the configuration migrations provided by
your installed adapter. A value-version mismatch rejects; saved-value migration
is a separate operation. The envelope supports up to 256 definitions and 1 MiB.
This opt-in format is separate from the existing built-in schema import/export.
